does the TriangleMeshObject require a specific type of model?

I was playing with the demo's triangle mesh object and tried passing it other models (like the box), but it throws an exception because the tag contains no data, I think. The custom vertex processor populates the tag data right? Does the model need to be made with as certain program or anything?

You can use any mesh you want. Your content processor has to be set to "VertexProcessor".

awesome! i'm a super noob to content processors and didnt even know you had to set them for each asset until now. :)
